Open SCAD – 3D Printing A Chuck Fixture!

In this episode, we will be revisiting the NYC Style Chuck concept (see more here: youtu.be/wB7eX_EXifQ) with a fixture printed in PETG (see more here: amzn.to/2VRKxo1) on the 3D Printer!

This has been working out surprisingly well for us, as while you aren’t going to use it to machine aerospace parts, it is a functional addition to any small CNC such as the 3040 (see more here: diy3dtech.com/purchase-3040-cnc-router/)

Open SCAD – That Lazy Machinist Bench Block!

One of the things I have wanted for a while is to share the linkage between classical machining and 3D printing as they basically are the same thing. Where CNC or classical machining is subtractive and 3D printing is additive the work-flows are still the same from CAD (Computer Aided Design) to CAM (computer Aided Manufacture) and finely production. With this I stumbled across That Lazy Machinist (see more here: www.thatlazymachinist.com/) who made a series of blueprints available online (see more here: diy3dtech.com/thatlazymachinistblueprints to download them) so I decided to convert them to 3D prints to demonstrate the interrelations of the disciplines. So the first project I selected was the Bench Block or Anvil.

This is a multipurpose bench tool and in fact converts well to 3D printing as the idea is this used punch out pin (i.e. the hole in the top) as well as hold round stock with the 45 degree bevel across the top. You will find them used quite a bit in gunsmithing and the like where there are a lot of pins which have to be inserted or removed. With this the plastic reduces the chance of marring the object which the pin is being either removed or inserted.

This one was printed in PETG (see more here: amzn.to/2TruUln) with the top annealed with a heat gun to strengthen. I would also suggest Bridge Nylon (see more here: amzn.to/2S2LMSN) for extra durability, yet if does fail after a while. Simply print a new one! That is the beauty of additive manufacturing!

Mini Lathe – 3D Printed Y Axis DRO!

So I have been getting back into using my Chinese made Harbor Freight Mini-Lathe (see more here: diy3dtech.com/mini-lathes/) and wanted to add a Y Axis DRO (Digital Read Out) to it but didn’t want to spend big bucks so designed up one of my own using an economical dial indicator I got off Amazon (see more here: amzn.to/2FUoo2G ) and if you need to extended the reach of the indicator, you also add an extension kit such as this amzn.to/2WdmakH and or a tip kit such as this amzn.to/2MsesPb depending upon your needs.

Because the dial indicator had to be moved over because of the control knob, I used 3M washer on the end (you can see it in the pictures) to make contact. Another option would be to get a Tip Kit (see more here: amzn.to/2MsesPb). Additionally I have also 1/4 magic nut for the mounting too! This has turned out to be a super handy addition to the Mini-Lathe and I have also have the Open SCAD code posted on our Open SCAD site if you want to get a copy here: openscad.diy3dtech.com/mini-lathe-3d-printed-y-axis-dro/
